This course is structured for the beginner coder or clinician to understand basic coding. This program series will provide attendees with an overview of how to assign ICD-10 codes and review the coding guidelines for ICD-10

Session 1: Fundamentals of Coding 101

  • Understand the five steps to correctly assign ICD-10 -CM Codes.
  • Explore coding conventions necessary for proper code assignment.
  • Identify how to code specific diagnostic areas.

Session 2: Coding and Its Impact on Reimbursement

  • Learn how to choose the primary & other diagnoses using ICD-10-CM & OASIS guidelines
  • Review OASIS M items that relate to coding including inpatient diagnosis (M1011), primary diagnosis (M1021) & other diagnoses (M1023).
  • Discuss the proper sequencing of diagnoses and gain a basic understanding of case mix diagnoses

Session 3: Understanding Common Diagnostic Areas – Where Coding Mistakes Occur: Part 1

  • Identify how to code specific diagnostic areas
    • Diabetes;
    • Neurological Diagnoses;
    • Neoplasms/Cancers;
    • Circulatory Diagnoses
  • Identify common areas where coding errors cause loss of revenue (both sessions 3 & 4)

Session 4: Understanding Common Diagnostic Areas – Where Coding Mistakes Occur: Part 2

  • Identify how to code specific diagnostic areas
    • Respiratory;
    • Digestive;
    • Orthopedics;
    • Wounds & ulcers

Presenter: Joan Usher, BS, RHIA, ACE, President, JLU Health Record Systems is a nationally recognized health information management expert. Joan has a degree in Health Information Management and has been a home health consultant for over 25 years. She is an AHMA Approved ICD-10 CM trainer, and has educated thousands of clinicians across the country in the different elements of OASIS and coding. Whether teaching beginners or advanced clinicians, Joan receives accolades from her program participants. Joan is past president of the Massachusetts Health Information Management Association and is a Board of Director for the Home Care Alliance of MA.

Registration fees are based on one phone/webinar connection; multiple site participation for your agency will require a separate registration fee for each connection. Please note: if your agency has sent in 1 registration but 3 people from your agency register through the webinar link, your agency will be invoiced for the 2 additional registrations.

Cancellation Policy: 

If you cancel your registration prior to five business days before the program, you will receive a refund less a 25% administrative fee. All cancellations must be made in writing. No refunds for cancellations or exchanges within four business days from the date of the program. If due to unforeseen circumstances this event must be cancelled, you will receive a full refund.
