Susan Marie, Ph.D., PMHNP, CARN-AP, BC, licensed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and certified in Addictions, brings over 30 years of clinical experience treating adults with diverse mental illnesses, specializing in serious mental illness, trauma and substance use disorders. She is noted for her “pitfalls” and “pearls” of psychopharmacology. Her passiSons are “radical respect” for people with serious mental illnesses and addictions, excellence in psychopharmacology, and integrating psychotherapeutic interventions for clients with PTSD, addictions and chronic pain.

Dr. Marie is an Associate Professor at Oregon Health & Science University where she teaches graduate psychiatric mental health nursing students. She is the Medical Director for Behavioral Health at Old Town Clinic, in Portland, Oregon where she maintains a practice specializing in diagnostic evaluation, psychopharmacology for complex patients and psychopharmacology consultation to other professionals. Dr. Marie’s work developing integrated behavioral health within primary care settings was noted in the Robert Wood Johnson LEAP initiative and awarded by the Oregon Primary Care Association in 2013.

Psychotropic medication agents can save and improve lives when properly prescribed. Monitoring and intervening for serious adverse effects impact successful client outcomes. This two-day program is designed for nurse practitioners and registered nurses seeking a greater understanding of the common pitfalls in prescribing and managing psychotropic medications. You will explore the role and importance of inflammation in psychiatric disorders and best evidence-based strategies for treating anxiety, mood, psychotic and other disorders. You will discuss the safe tapering of benzodiazepines, effective utilization of complementary agents for various psychiatric and emotional conditions, and how to improve collaboration with clients and peers using holistic care and evidenced based strategies.

Act Against Suicide: For Nurses

Suicide assessment, prevention, and intervention is a topic relevant to all nursing care providers. Research shows that most people who commit suicide have a diagnosable mental and/or substance use disorder. This program will explore the critical elements of assessing for suicide risk in the general population and special populations including military/veterans, adolescents, elderly, and LGBT. It will review key strategies in providing effective suicide prevention and provide hands on application of evidence-based intervention tools.
This course has been approved by the Washington State Department of Health to meet the WA requirement for 6.0 contact hours in suicide assessment, prevention, and management for registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses (TRNG.TG.60717225-SUIC).
